First Christmases are a special time for newlyweds. Though this year isn't our first Christmas, it is the first time we are hosting the holiday at our home. The tree is trimmed, the lights are strung, but I feel there are still a few personal touches needed to make our family feel most welcome.

What's missing? Stockings! You know the kind, "Twas the night before Christmas,...The stockings were hung by the chimney with care." How inviting to walk in and see your name on a stocking hung along a mantle or bannister?!

The Sunday Paper:: Let it snow!

This year the boy and I decided to change things up a bit for our holiday card. We built a photo booth in the studio using flannel fabric, felt garland, and snowflakes; pulled out our favorite winter caps; and, put on some tunes. It was silly and fun and by far our best holiday photo to date. It took us a few tries to get the timing right (I may have gotten a little too excited about the snow, lol), which lead to uncontrollable laughter and further sillyness, but that's what it's all about.

Below are a few takes from the shoot. Which one will make the card?! Well, you will just have to wait to see the fully designed card on Christmas Day {smile}.

Gather twigs and berries and start constructing your holiday nest newlyweds!..it's December 1st and the holiday season has officially arrived. Before you know it you'll be entertaining guests, both invited and uninvited, so spare yourself the last minute makeovers and start preparing now.

Here are five tips to help you get started...

Tip No. 1: Decorate. Add seasonal accessories to your existing decor and determine DIY projects you are able and willing to do yourself in advance. Perhaps you want to make your own garland or give the table a personal touch with a handmade centerpiece. Leave yourself time to enjoy to process of creating and the fruits of your labor. Need an extra hand? Invite your hubby or a crafty friend to participate.

I never thought I was one for tradition. However, as I continue to write about the holidays it has occurred to me that over the years the boy and I have developed quite a few of our own. And it makes me think that perhaps the best traditions are those that are not necessarily intentional, but rather the result of a shared interest in repeating a beloved activity.

Take the Christmas tree. Each year, the weekend following Thanksgiving we grab some twine and scissor and head out to find our tree... {I would love to romanticize about visiting a tree farm or heading out to the forest, hiking out in the snow in search of our perfect tree, but frankly we live in Florida and that's not an option} hitting the tree lots at the local schools and churches looking for that one tree that will grace our home from now through Christmas - a Frazier fur, about 6-7 feet high, with all it's needles in tact.

As I write, I can smell the familiar pine scent from the tree we brought home yesterday, its branches illuminated, waiting to be adorned with ornaments. A mixture of heirloom glass bulbs and various baubles we collected over the years. Yet another beloved activity that has become tradition in our home.

newly {wed}nesday:: The First Thanksgiving

The first twelve months post wedding is a year of firsts such as the first time you send stationery bearing your new monaker, the first home you purchase together, and the first Thanksgiving you host for your family.

I remember the first Thanksgiving the boy and I shared as newlyweds. My family joined us at our loft for the holiday. Some may have called it a tight squeeze, but I prefer to say it was warm and cozy (*wink*). We worked with what we had to create a Thanksgiving we knew that all would enjoy.

We converted a large wooden worktable into a dining table by dressing it up with a few linens and a mix of chairs. The table was set with our new serverware, plates, and silver - gifts we received from our wedding. An old fold-out card table I used for extra work space in a pinch, served as a sideboard which of course we dressed up as well. It's amazing how a simple combination of textured linens, glass vases, candles, and cranberries can transform a rather dull table. To top it all off, I handcrafted hangtags and affixed to the napkins with baker's twine, noting every family member's name in calligraphy.

For Thanksgiving dinner, perhaps the most important aspect of the day (the food), we invited everyone to participate. Each bringing their area of expertise to the meal. My father made his famous sweet potatoes - a recipe that has been featured at the past thirty plus Thanksgivings. My mother prepared her savory stuffing which always holds true to its name - it is so delicious that you don't stop eating it until you are "stuffed." Grammie's apple pie warmed in the oven for dessert. And I took on the pièce de résistance -the turkey, and other accoutrements.

The boy kept the glasses full of Beaujolais Nouveau - a seasonal varietal that has become our personal Thanksgiving tradition. Music played in the background - a combination of Billy, Miles, and Ella - and we all shared laughs and stories as we gathered around the table for the first Stiles Thanksgiving. A first Thanksgiving both new and familiar.

If you are a newlywed celebrating your first Thanksgiving tomorrow, I will share the same advice I have shared with brides planning their wedding - make it uniquely yours.

When I think about Thanksgivings past, my memories always take me back to my grandmother's house and the time we spent together preparing for dinner. Being too young to cook, my biggest responsibility for many years was to set the table - a role I took quite seriously. An elegant combination of linens, grandmother's crystal and china, the silver placed in proper order, and the napkins fanned through their rings.

Though Thanksgiving has changed locations and I am now the one cooking, the role of setting the table is still one I come to enjoy. Below are a few handmade pieces that would make a lovely Thanksgiving table...

"Skiing.Sundance.Social Media," the motto of Altitude Design Summit 2011 and the winter wish list of yours truly. I registered today and just don't know how I will ever bear the anticipation until I head to Salt Lake City in January. I'm beyond excited, I'm down right giddy.

Though I want nothing more to gush over all the wonderful things I have planned for this trip, to continue to tell you about all the rousing details,...I cannot, because to do so would reveal a few surprises I have up my sleeve for the boy. I'm afraid you will just have to wait until upon my return. Sorry to be such a tease.

I can, however, share with you all the design blogging fun to be had at the conference. Just check out the list of blog royalty scheduled to speak at the conference. All our "daily reads" and a few others we look forward to reading.

newly {wed}nesday:: give thanks

It's that time of year, to give thanks, but it is also that time shortly after the wedding when you sit down to write your thank you notes to your generous family and friends.

For some it may seem overwhelming, or perhaps a daunting task as you are still lingering in the relaxation of your honeymoon. But if done right, this first task as a newly wed can be an enjoyable time of reflection and gratitude. Here are a few tips to get you started on the right note (pun intended)...

Treat yourself to a new stationery set. Have custom designed thank you cards made that compliment your wedding invitations or feature your new married monogram. The prettier the paper the more inspired you'll be to write.
Start writing as soon as you receive the first gift, even if it is before the wedding. Etiquette suggests you have up to three months post nuptials, but don't use this as an excuse to procrastinate. By starting early and doing a few at a time, your thank you's will be off your desk and in your guest's mailboxes weeks before you figure out the froth setting on that new cappuccino maker.
Get personal. Do not send out generic thank you notes. Tell your aunt Jessica how much you and your hubby love mixing it up in the kitchen with your new stacking bowls and whisk set.
Thank everyone. You may not receive a physical gift from each guest, but I am betting their presence at your wedding was no less meaningful. Tell your guests how much you appreciate their company at your wedding "Greg, Thank you so much for flying all the way from Chicago to be with us on our big day. It wouldn't have been a celebration without you there to lead the dance line."
Have fun. Enjoy this time to reflect on your wedding day and the time shared with family and friends. The joy you feel will carry through to your words.

nearly {wed}nesday:: a vision and an atelier

The other evening, one of our newest nearly weds joined us at the studio for their design consultation during which I had the pleasure of speaking with the bride one-on-one about her vision. A bride of my own heart, seeking a bohemian modern wedding with attention to personal details.

She shared endearing stories about the site where they would be married - her family's lake home - and her relationship with the groom, her family, and the women that would stand by her side the day she says "i do." All giving me a vivid picture of her bridal style, and a very unique advantage to creating an invitation suite that would be truly theirs.

The bride also shared photos and magazine clips of images she felt best embodied her vision. And I am so glad she did. Each image blended effortlessly with the picture she had painted. What's more...she introduced me to a new French fashion blogger and designer that I have become absolutely smitten!

Tonight, I am heading to the Bonobo concert with the boy and a band of merry followers. It has been far too long since we attended a concert and I am really looking forward to it. I love a good live performance, especially in a smaller venue.

The evening has me thinking about the role music plays in the creative process. I find it so inspiring. Even while in the studio, I am most productive with the right soundtrack playing in the background. One art form fueling another. Such great synergy.

Thanks to all of our lovely clients it has been a week packed full of fun with Paper. We set the last pearl on our handcrafted invitations for K's bridal shower; gave Ladies' Night a holiday twist with a festive pink and green silhouette; designed new cards for the Gift of Paper; brought design to life with two new brands printing 5000 business cards, postcards, and stickers; and sent three stationery sets to auction for a local fundraiser.

Now it's time to take a little break to recharge for the coming week,...and catch up on a little light reading. First on the list, the incredibly charming first issue of Anthology, a new quarterly design and lifestyle magazine with a narrative twist. I was immediately drawn to the cover (take one guess why, teehee) and can not wait to sit back with my cup of tea and see what wonderful articles lie within its pages.

Monday Handmade:: seasonal scents

It's hard to believe that it is November already. I just don't know where the time goes, but I am embracing this new month by making a few changes. Such as switching out our citrus-scented candles for scents more indicative of the season like pumpkin spice, vanilla, and apple cinnamon. Our little loft smells of sugar and spice...absolutely yummy! Candles are a surefire way to alter the feel of a room and I am loving these delicious jar versions by Bliss Soybean Candles and Gifts.

From the movie quote reading to the ice cream sundae bar, E&P's wedding was full of personality and loads of fun. The boy and I have celebrated the marriages of many family and friends, but in all the weddings we have attended I can honestly say I have never been witness to a reading featuring quotes from the likes of When Harry Met Sally (my all-time favorite movie, P.S.), two grown men in suits competitively break dancing (one being my husband, lol), and a true Fourth of July-worthy firework show. Throw in the girl doing the Roger Rabbit and, well, it was a good time had by all. Thanks to E&P for inviting us to a fun-filled celebration where everyone's personality shined!

I love the industrial look of many of the fashion studios in New York City...exposed brick warehouse walls, vaulted ceilings, suspended aluminum task lamps, bolts of raw fabric...well, you get the picture. So when I looking for our next Monday Handmade feature I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw these dress form beauties on Art Lab.

This past week I received a pretty package in the mail addressed to Paper Anniversary Co. from Jenny Ann Photography. Inside was a disc. I was thrilled, the photos from our shoot with Jennifer Peppers had arrived. Above is a glimpse into what went into that day. I immediately popped the disc in to my computer. Click after click, my excitement grew - we now have so many wonderful shots of our most recent Paper creations. Now it's down to business...

I am so honored to be a part of Hello, Splendor's first Blog Crawl and to have the opportunity to share my story along with that of so many other talented bloggers.

A blog concept started by the sweet and lovely Beth Dotolo, the Blog Crawl is now in its fourth week. Yesterday, Dolan of the Daily Dolan Geiman blog shared the story of Barnstadt and Marigold and tomorrow Lesley of The Bright Life will unfold the pages of her book. Today, here is a chapter from my own life...

"My life is an open book"

The Author:: "Sommer Stiles, pen name "the girl behind paper anniversary"
The Setting:: On two wheels
The Characters:: the girl behind paper anniversary, my Fair Lady, and the Amsterdam
The Plot:: One Christmas a young girl wrote a letter to Santa asking him to bring her a Schwinn Fair Lady Stingray. There was nothing else on her list except for the bicycle and a few details to help Santa choose the right one. Pink with a flower-embroidered banana seat and matching pink pompoms for the handlebars. She even drew him a picture of the bicycle and signed the list along with a promise to be a good girl all year. On Christmas day, the girl woke up and ran to the see if the bicycle was under the tree only to find an assortment of small wrapped boxes, none big enough to hold a bicycle. Soon her family joined her and gathered around the tree to exchange gifts. With the last gift unwrapped, her mother asked the little girl to go out to the garage to retrieve a box to place the leftover bows and giftbags. Sulkingly, she did as her mother pleased. Upon opening the door to the garage she found her father standing next to a pink Schwinn Fair Lady Stingray with a flower-embroidered banana seat and matching pink pompoms just like the one in the picture she drew for Santa.

I will never forget this particlar Christmas morning, it was the day I got my first bicycle. I loved my "Fair Lady" because she was an expression of my personal style AND because of the places she took me. Though it may have only been around the neighborhood, I felt a sense of freedom that allowed my imagniation to reach far beyond those few blocks.

The Twist:: I eventually outgrew my "Fair Lady" and many years past where I didn't even have a bicycle at all. Yet, I continued to treasure that moment in my life and knew that one day I would ride again. A few years ago, I was driving down a road I had driven down a hundred times before, but on this given day I noticed a charming little shop with a lovely bicycle out front. I stopped in and asked the owner if the bicycle was for sell and how much. That day I took home my Electra Amesterdam Classic. I hopped on, started pedalling, and reconnected to that feeling of freedom I had known long ago.

When I started Paper Anniversary Co. I knew I wanted to work "The Amsterdam" into our logo, to embody the sense of wonder I felt into our brand and to convey the opportunity held by a dream.

Thus the image was born...

The Sunday Paper:: A lesson in baking

As the owner and creative designer of Paper Anniversary Co. it is may not exactly be a tell-all expose to state that I am a right-brained thinker. My best ideas usually appear at random...while listening to music, traveling to new cities, sketching or jotting notes in my journal whilst sitting in the park, or simply shopping. Intuition vetoes practical thinking. My opinions tend to be subjective with the moment, the mood, the day. And on most days I see the forest through the trees.

Luckily for me I have had some pretty incredible left-brained thinkers in my life who have taught me a thing or two about all things logical, sequential, and rational (eh-hum, the boy). I don't know what I would do without the "lefties" and all the insight they have imparted from the other hemisphere. I really am better for it and sometimes (would like to) think I am a self-taught left-brain thinker.

Looking to learn more from the lefties, I recently signed up for the thinkBakery Half-Dozen Course. Much to my delight, Bakery proprietors J aime Derringer and Erin Loechne, the girls behind Design Milk and Design for Mankind respectively, have bridged the hemispheres and offer a course that shares left-brain business principles in a right-brain format. We have only been in the proverbial kitchen for two weeks and I already feel like an accomplished baker...let's just say I know the difference between "baking soda" and "baking powder." *wink*

The Sunday Paper:: Have yourself a Paper holiday!

The boy and I love the holiday season - the parties, music, and classic films, the family traditions, favorite recipes, and extra time together, and, of course, the holiday cards. I think we check our mailbox more often during the month on December that any other month during the year. It' so much fun to see how people show off their personalities through the style of card they choose. Some are playful others spiritual, but all a true delight to receive.

And it's just as fun to design our own. Each year, around this time, I come up with a new design (with the boy's input of course) to send to our family and friends. They almost always include a recent photo from a trip we took that year or a special moment such as our 2008 holiday card that featured our wedding portrait. This year I am taking it a step further.

In collaboration with Jenny Ann Photography, we are launching a selection of holiday photo announcements that are customizable with personal photo and signature. Though we have kept some designs exclusive, we are releasing a few favorites. Just another fun way to celebrate with Paper {smile}. The Sunday Paper (On Monday):: From Park Avenue to Memory Lane

Two years ago today I married 'the boy,' my Henry. I remember waking up the morning of our wedding feeling peaceful and calm. I had been planning this day for over a year, I had been dreaming of this moment my whole life. I never felt more prepared.

When the moment came to walk down the aisle, everything fell into place and anything that didn't went unnoticed because in that moment nothing else mattered. I was marrying my best friend, the love of my life, the Harry to my Sally, and as beautiful as I felt in the Monique Lhuillier gown I was wearing, I know the moment have been just as magical in a plain white frock.

That being said, when I awoke from the splendor and took a look around at all the details I had been planning I was delighted. The boy was too. He had been so deeply entrenched in studying for the Bar Exam that it was like he was seeing it all for the first time. And in a way he was, we both were. Until that day, all the details had just been a notebook of inspirational images, a vision. With the help of some very generous and talented friends, every detail came together to create a very personal experience, a wedding whose only real theme was "Henry and Sommer."

Black and white striped grosgrain ribbon from Les Bon Ribbon (A dead ringer for the ribbon in My Fair Lady dress and very Parisian which as an admitted Francophile I was immediately drawn to.)

Stamp featuring image of a Victoria Bust (I created this based on an image featured in the paper ephemera belonging to my grandmother. Also an inspiration for our rehearsal dinner invitations.)

Our wedding invitation suite (This was my first full invitation suite - from the hand drawn map to the antique gold envelope liners - I loved every minute of creating these!)

...These images that once served as inspiration for our wedding are now wonderful mementos from that day (and the entire bridal experience). I am happy to announce that this is only the first of many more inspirational boards to come. When I think about where I was two years ago this very weekend, my heart fills with joy. I have so many fond memories of the moment featured above and those that preceded it. We were in Winter Park, Florida - a place the holds so much history for the boy and I - and we were surrounded by family and friends who joined us for four wonderful days of celebration. We had the time of our lives and, thankfully, an amazingly talented photographer, Rob Witzel, who in true photojournalistic fashion, captured every moment along the way.

Over the next couple days, you won't find me here or in the studio. I'll be celebrating with the boy. But be sure to return Monday for a special anniversary edition of The Sunday Paper.

A week from Monday, the boy and I will be celebrating our second wedding anniversary - cotton. And I am at a loss for what to give as an anniversary gift. For our first anniversary the gifts were practically serendipitous...it's just too much to live up to, the bar has been set too high. Oh the pressure of finding the perfect gift. Cotton seems so limited and its modern alternative, China, doesn't do me much good either. The only suggestions my google searches lead me to our monogrammed bath robes and blankets featuring personal photos...the boy wouldn't be caught dead with either and would assuredly think the gift was a gag gift like a Snuggie. What's a girl to do?!

As the weekend approaches, I look forward to returning to my old Saturday habit of riding my bicycle down to the local farmer's market. It's as much about shopping the market as it is about the ride there. That time alone to clear my head and breathe in a bit of fresh air. The ritual has subsided, at least at home here in Tampa where the days of summer have been hot and humid, the only exceptions being sporadic visits to farmer's markets while traveling...

A charming Craftsman-style bungalow with beamed ceilings, four bedrooms, a cozy second floor alcove, sleeping porch, and a kitchen nook for $1,537.00 dollars...I'll take it! Sadly, it is not 1916 and acquiring the perfect bungalow is no longer as easy as ordering from Sear Roebuck Modern Homes. The good news is that there are still many homes of this style already built, many even restored, available in many neighborhoods nationwide.

Here in Tampa, Florida the Craftsmen-style bungalow is fairly common. The boy and I have been scouting neighborhood after neighborhood for that one bungalow that is to be our first home, and this weekend we plan to check out a few that have recently caught our eye. There are some exciting prospects out there, and I know (hope) that is just a matter of time before we become new nesters.

In recent months, we have been receiving orders for custom designs and our paper greetings from Paper fans all over the world. An American bride in Tokyo will celebrate her bridal shower with Paper next month. "Just for the Halibut" has traveled all the way to Auckland, New Zealand. And our new friend in the UK, Will of Bright Bazaar, will receive a set of his "cocktails, soon?" greeting cards as well as a set from our collection.

One of our lovely new clients wrote me a beautiful note detailing how she discovered Paper Anniversary Co. She described her experience so vividly...her and her children dancing to the song "Boum" by Charles Trenet that plays on our website while selecting their favorite paper greetings. I felt as if I were right there with them, dancing along.

The whole thing has me thinking that it is a small world after all, thanks in large part to the internet. And it means so very much to me that we have been invited into the homes and lives of Paper fans in this very unique way. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for giving us this wonderful opportunity!!!

The Sunday Paper:: This Scene Steals My Heart

From fashion to film, I tend to be drawn to the icons most reminiscent of the early sixties, twenties, or somewhere in between. Rarely will you find me referencing contemporary pop culture. Yet, there are cases, though seemingly too few, when I discover something in the present day that is timeless.

The novel by Audrey Niffenegger, "The Time Traveler's Wife," and film adaptation directed by Robert Schwentke is a classic love story. I have read the novel and seen the film a dozen times, the relationship between Henry and Clare never fails to warm my heart and, yes, even bring me to tears. This Sunday is no exception. Is the girl behind Paper Anniversary a sap?! Perhaps. Though I prefer to be labeled a romantic.

I could go on about how much I enjoy this story, but that's not why I devoting a blog post to it. Rather, a particular scene caught my attention...the wedding reception of Henry and Clare (given this film is now on DVD I am hoping this is not a spolier)...and I had to share it with our brides.

Taking place on the grounds of her family's estate, a dance floor, strung lights and paper lanterns, and a live band create an ambience that brings the couple's love to the center of focus. Their first dance song, a cover of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Broken Social Scene, has a melody that plays like a waltz but is more like a folk song in that way that it tells a story. Together, the scene steals my heart. Piece by piece, it gives you all the elements needed for a wonderfully romantic wedding reception.

The Sunday Paper:: Photo Shoot with Jenny Ann Photography

It may be a little late for the Sunday Paper, but there is good reason for the delayed delivery.

We were in Orlando, Florida today for a photo shoot with the girl behind Jenny Ann Photography, Miss Jennifer Peppers. "Peppers" as I know her is a fellow blogger, photographer, and long-time friend. Back in our slumber party days I would have never imagined that we would one day be collaborating as creative professionals, but now it is by no stretch of the imagination that we are doing just that.

Jenny is a natural talent, and that is not a phrase I use lightly. She sees more through the lens than the image, she sees the moment. Her baby and family portraits are treasured keepsakes. I enjoy her baby portraits so much so that I just had to design announcements around them. Lucky for me she agreed and we are now working on announcements and holiday photo cards together. More on that later.

When I decided it was time to shelf my camera and hire a real photographer (ha!) to shoot our product line, I called Jenny. I was confident she would be able to help realize my vision and I am thrilled with the results. We had a lot of laughs, got a little dirty, and shot over thirty Paper designs. And even a few photos of the girl.

This month is a whirlwind, we are going non-stop with the release of our new greeting card line, giveaway with luxe+lillies, and custom design orders. It would appear as if we have enough quite a bit on our plates, but I can not resist a fun design challenge and that is why I have branched off a bit and designed a Sweet Sixteen party invitation for the current Minted.com design challenge "Coming of Age." I think I was drawn to this particular challenge because I remember how big of deal it was to have "the" Sweet Sixteen" party and I would have loved to have custom-designed invitations for the event! The design I have created for this challenge is inspired by the young girl who, ahead of her time, already has a flair for vintage, and who understands that sometimes the best statements are understated.

It's all a buzz here in the studio and though there is no time for daydreaming, there have been admittedly a few moments where I have stopped, looked around, and become cognizant of just how quickly our little business is growing (thanks to you no doubt *wink*). Realizing this, we recently decided that the next step was to revisit our business structure - to incorporate. After filing the Articles of Incorporation and some additional paperwork, I am so happy to share that Paper Anniversary is now Paper Anniversary Co.! You may see a few changes around here and our website to reflect this change in coming months, however, we are committed to maintaining the same boutique-style of operation you have come to know. No corporate mentality here, just good old fashioned Paper.

I am the kind of person that if I don't put my thoughts down on paper they will clutter my mind and eventually get pushed back to the far reaches of my subconscious to make room for new ideas. Sadly, the ideas left on top aren't always the best. People like me are why the journal was first created. A book full of blank pages waiting for you to sketch your visions and write about your dreams, or sometimes, simply your list of to-do's. I keep one in my purse, another in my office, AND one on my nightstand.

The Sunday Paper :: typewriter typography

I have always been drawn to vintage design, styles that have a historical richness. The typewriter offers this in both its build and its typeface. In developing the brand identity for Paper Anniversary, I knew I wanted it to embody a sense of history and, therefore, it was a clear choice that this classic typeface would be used throughout our company's web and print designs.

Despite all the digital options it was important to remain loyal to the source of inspiration. The first typewriter I acquired was a 1960s Remington Rand Monarch. A beautiful machine in a charming mint green that you may recall from a previous Sunday Paper "mint condition." This is where it all started.

I remember when I first opened the case, I looked at the typewriter and wondered...If were to insert a sheet of paper into the feeder, would it begin typing a story? The worn keys perhaps the result of a passionate author furiously pounding his way through writer's block. The faintness of the ink left on a the ribbon bearing the secrets of a love letter once written. The spring a little less springy after years of commonplace correspondence. All adding to the visual appearance of the current type.

This past week, a friend and fellow typewriter enthusiast, passed on their beloved Olympia. A handsome grey portable that looks as new as it did the day it was made, but undoubtedly has its own stories to tell. Just needs Paper.

{Dipping my toes in the (very cold) Pacific Ocean at Cannon Beach, Oregon Coast}

Today I find myself dreaming of the west. The natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest made such an impression on me. I can't help but long to be amongst its towering cedars and rocky beaches if for only one more day.

It was truly majestic. I think I took close to three-hundred photos! Apart from the photos and a few other mementos ( Pardon that I avoid the word "souvenir," being from Florida the word has always reminded me of the dime-a-dozen chotchkys found in the gas stations surrounding Kissimmee), I returned home with unexpected inspiration and zeal. I feel like I am about to burst. In order to avoid implosion (haha), I am putting it all on paper - pulls for our new inspiration board, notes on projects ideas, strategies for future business development, and, of course, new stationery and product designs.

This is why I love to travel. Being so far removed from the familiar allows you to open your mind to new things. To live, breathe, and think freely. You don't necessarily have to go to the opposite side of the continent to achieve this, but you do need to go outside of the box.

Today, the boy and I are heading out west, to the Pacific Northwest to be specific. Destination: Portland, Oregon. The nation's most bicycle-friendly city. The bad news, I am unable to bring my Electra Amesterdam. The good news, I found a shop that rents them! I can not wait to explore the city on my rented Townie. Eleven hours and counting.

As a young girl and throughout grade school, my grandmother made most of my clothing and accessories on her 1950s Singer sewing machine, or quite often by hand. Many children I knew at that age would have preferred something from one of the mall's trendiest retail stores, but I was pleased to have the tags in my clothing read "made just for you by grammie." The dresses, vests, headbands and other attire (let me remind you it was the early 80s, lol) she made me were more personal than anything I could have selected off-the-rack. And a better variety of options. I could choose not only the size, but the color, pattern, and fabric as well. I guess that is why I am drawn to the embroidered pieces above, because they are "made just for you."

For our family, the Fourth of July has traditionally been a sailing weekend. My mother would pack the galley with our favorite summer food and beverages while me father unfurlled the sails and inspected the riggings. As a child, I typically was focused on more important things, like making sure we had enough sparklers to last us through the night or that my father had left a clear path to the bowsprint where I could later sit above the water as the waves crashed against the bow and, on a good day, watch as the dolphins followed alongside.

In those moments, I felt a sense of freedom and independence that even today, miles away from the ocean, I can recall as I remember what this weekend has come to mean to me.

When I was a young girl, my mother would always sing the song "You are my Sunshine" to cheer me up on days that were gray. In the search for our feature for this week's Monday Handmade I ran across this pretty print by Katie Daisy of The Wheatfield. I was so elated! I immediately ordered the print for the studio. Now, even though my mother no longer sings to me, I can still hear her comforting voice "when skies are gray."

At Paper Anniversary, it is our motto to "celebrate {the special occassions and the everyday} with paper." Thinking of this, it became obvious that we needed to offer greeting cards along with our collection of stationery, announcements, and invitations. And we could not think of a better way to kickoff our new line of stationery products with a tribute to Dads.

As brides, we say with good intention "I want my bridesmaids to have a dress they can wear again," and as bridesmaids we hope but know all to well that this is an unlikely circumstance. That is not to say that brides generally have poor taste in attire for their wedding party. This Memorial Day weekend the boy and I have come together with family and friends for a long-held southern tradition...Jazzfest. A weekend of delectable street food, cocktails, and music wrapped up this afternoon with the honorary Jazz Funeral. The procession of musicians leading the crowds down the street with their brass instruments always takes me back to the Jazz Age. For a moment, I envision myself in Fitzgerald's new era of 'relaxation' - the boy, a modern day Nick Carraway, and I, my own version of the leading lady wearing a tea gown and my hair wavvy and pinned-up.

The music, fashion, and architecture of the Jazz Age offer much inspiration for a modern day wedding. Take the one below recently featured in Martha Stewart Weddings. I love the details the bride chose to highlight from that most infuential era between World War I and the Great Depression.

Where would a fledging female indiepreneur be today without the Biz Ladies??? Design*Sponge's section on starting (and growing) your business has become a go-to resource for artists, designers, and, well you guessed it, yours truly. When we decided to start Paper Anniversary I scoured print and online resources to learn more about legal structure, financial planning, licensing, branding and the like. There is A LOT out there, and I had to weed through quite a bit of junk before I found an author or expert that spoke my language like Biz Ladies.

As our little paper company continues to grow, resources like Biz Ladies continue to be valuable. Starting and running a business is an exciting venture, but the business side of the biz can sometimes be intimidating - sole proprietor v. corporation, storefront v. online, retail v. wholesale - how does one decide. Yet, when I speak with a fellow business owner or read their blog I know "we can do it!" Thanks Biz Ladies.

Two weeks ago, I shared that we were getting ready for the Junior League of Tampa Annual Dinner. It was a great event for a wonderful group of women and we were glad to be a part of it. Weeks of work went into fulfilling the design request for the invitation suite, programs, and other design elements as well as preparing sample stationery sets for the swag bags, notecard and recipe sets to sell at the event, and developing the overall aesthetic for our table. As the event stationer, Paper Anniversary was provided prominent placement at the event. It is such a unique opportunity as a stationer to attend the events you have designed for and actually see with your own eyes how it all comes together. Not to mention the opportunity to personally meet the many individuals who received your design in the mail, perhaps not even knowing who or where it came from. We met brides and mother-of-the-brides, event planners and photographers, Paper Anniversary fans and lovers of all things stationery. Simply lovely.

This weekend I am hopping in the car and driving to meet the girls in Winter Park, FL. On the itinerary...a visit to the salon, champagne lunch, shopping along the ave, dinner al fresco, and of course, much overdue girl talk. I live for these weekends when we can all relax and have fun together in perhaps one of the most charming cities I know. Happy Weekend!
